 More info, as this just happened two more times to me today, in a row.

 Both times, the following actions had been taken:

 I had recently started, and ended, a MSN-chat ... then did a few other
 things in IM (typing to someone else, pasting here, etc) ...

 Then I moved my mouse away ... (In fact, moved it completely off of the
 desktop ... I use Synergy to use one Mouse/Keyboard with 3 computers) ...
 It was exactly when I moved  the mouse from one monitor to the next, the
 mouse didn't appear on the next monitor ... and the original computer
 locked up.

 just a little more fuel for the fire.

 Gaim never did this.   However, Gaim crashed whenever I tried to add a
 msn-chat, which is why I upgraded.
