Comment:

 1) Gaim or gaim, nothing else.
 2) pidgin has a preference not to pop up windows while away or ever,
 because people with crappy window managers whined a lot.
 3) Even without 2 simply keeping the conversation window open is enough to
 keep it from popping up on new messages.

 If you need the collection window a plugin could do that, though the
 system tray already indicates unread messages I believe (and the buddy
 list window itself might also).
