Comment:

 Nope. There shouldn't be anything that tinkers with the
 appearance/behavior etc.

 On the second laptop, I installed pidgin pretty early, soon after I
 installed a firewall/antivirus/browser, but before I really installed any
 other software, and it appeared to be there at the beginning. Note that
 both of these are OEM versions of windows, but that they belong to
 different manufacturers, as stated above, so I'd be very surprised if they
 made the same change.

 If it's helpful, I never appeared to have this problem with the older
 version of gaim I previously had, so it might be related to something
 which has since changed.
