 I have seen this behavior on my system as well with Pidgin 2.02 on Ubuntu
 7.04 Feisty.  Often, especially with long away messages, the entry for me
 in my buddy list will be marked as "Away" with no message although the
 away message I typed will appear at the bottom of the buddy list and in
 the tray.

 One way to observe the behavior is to copy the "Description" text for this
 bug and paste it as a new away message.  Ensure that there is no leading
 or trailing whitespace, and you will be marked as "Away" with no away
 message, but your tray icon and the status switcher will both show the
 text.  Contributing factors likely include length of the away message and
 lack of leading or trailing whitespace.
