Comment (by slainangel):

Seeing the same problem with 2.0.2-0.fc5, about 5 times a day on average.
No crash report, no error messages, all logfiles are cleanly closed and
the IRC server receives my normal quit message. Looks to me like pressing
tab is occasionally interpreted somewhere as a command to exit.

Noticed a few commonalities, some may be coincidence, some may be
 relevant:
I have a long conversation (several minutes) on MSN, or in a private query
with an IRC contact. I use alt+tab to switch back to channel, and then try
to tab-complete a name and pidgin just exits. I have only seen this happen
immediately after switching back to channel, on the first line I type
(whether the nick I'm completing is at the beginning of the line or not).
I have only seen this happen when switching windows with alt+tab, not when
using the mouse (although I tend to stick to keyboard-only 90% of the time
anyway). I have only seen this happen when switching from a pidgin window
containing a 1-on-1 conversation (never yet when switching from another
IRC channel, another application or the contact list) to an IRC channel
(although I have never tried tab-complete in any other window, don't even
 know if it works).
Also, in about 3/4 of the instances I've seen, the name I'm trying to
complete ends with a "`" backtick. As this isn't very common (only 3 or 4
people with such nicks in channels with an average population of 50), I
figured it might be relevant. If so, when I'm completing a name without
this character, it could be that the few letters I typed also matched
someone else's nick who had one.
