 Do you have sounds turned on?[[BR]]

 I noticed something like this happen when I turned off ALSA and then all
 the sound threads/processes got stuck. Pidgin ran out of file handles
 then. Only way to fix it was to restart Pidgin.[[BR]]

 Perhaps a similar thing happened.
