 A few more bits of data:

 I stopped logging into MSNchat ... and the crashes stopped for weeks.

 I JUST got one yesterday.  So they can still happen, but are MUCH less
 frequent without being logged into MSNchat.   If I log into MSNchat, then
 it can/will happen within a few hours.

 In response to the post by datallah ... I would be surprised if it's
 actually Synergy causing the bug.  (I believe it's just making it worse
 since it then locks the machine after the exception) ...

 But specifically for the following two reasons:
  * I don't have the problem with other GTK apps, such as GIMP
  * Gaim worked perfectly fine with Synergy, NEVER causing this crash.
 Only when I upgraded to Pidgin did the problem start.
