 The actual specific server that the buddy is connected to shouldn't be a
 factor here (as long as the servers are in the same network(i.e. you can
 PM the buddy)).

 What exactly was different about the situation that failed compared to the
 one that succeeded?  Specifics about the servers might be helpful to avoid
 confusion.
