Comment:

 Unfortunately, there isn't an easy fix for this, it is an old GTK+ bug
 that has been fixed in recent GTK+ versions (which, of course, won't work
 on win98).

 The workaround is to edit your `.purple\prefs.xml` and add a\ `<pref
 name="custom_font" type="string" value="arial 9" />` line to the
 `pidgin/conversations` section.
