 I agree that the new message icon is very hard to notice. This problem is
 actually quite complicated, since we're dealing with colour changes that
 are likely not directly in foveal vision, so picking icons becomes really
 difficult (since you usually pick them by looking directly at them and
 thinking "hey, that looks good"). I think we can safely say, though, that
 it would be ''much'' better to use an icon with a brighter colour for the
 new messages. The current contrast is very hard to notice.

 I've mocked up both a red [[Image(pidgin-new-msg-red.png)]] and purple
 [[Image(pidgin-new-msg-purple.png)]] alternative to the existing one.

 Though I do like the existing status indicator tray icons, they do limit
 the ability to make the new message icon noticeable, since they themselves
 are very colourful. For noticeability alone, it would be best to use
 something like the current new message icon as the default and then make
 it colourful when new messages arrive.
