 I'm back in Ubuntu and won't be able to boot Windows or reply for the next
 week or so, but here's what I can tell:

 I'm using the latest version of Pidgin, downloaded and installed
 yesterday. I didn't install any other GTK+ stuff before, Windows was
 installed the day before yesterday.
