Comment (by jleinenbach):
I was successful with Google Talk, so let's go through all the steps:
Although the "register" button of pidgin creates new XMPP-accounts, this
feature doesn't work for Google Talk. Instead, you have to create your
account on their website first.
This is what you already did, then you added your XMPP-account within
pidgin with gmail.com as domain and clicked the "save" button.
Your client tried to connect to the talk.google.com server, but you've got
the Windows socket error No. 10060 (Operation Timed Out). This means that
a connection attempt or idle connection timed out.
The gmail.com servers are sometimes a bit slow... Today, I had to
reconnect several times.
Another cause may be your firewall since the Google Talk client
automatically uses port 443 if port 5222 fails:
http://www.google.com/support/talk/bin/answer.py?answer=27930
So please try to set the following information in your "Advanced" settings
tab of your pidgin account configuration:
check/activate: "use old SSL (port 5223)"
set port to: 443
set server to: talk.google.com
With this setting, I can connect to the Google Talk server successfully
and my firewall says it actually uses port 443 (and not 5223).
