 been able to find for what characters need to be escaped in a gtkrc file
 or what the escape character is I tried \ to no avail. I also tried using
 single quotes with no success.

 It appears that GTK+ reserves <ctrl><shift>1 through 8 as part of its
 default input method, but I'm unsure of this.  Other shortcuts such as
 <ctrl><shift>e or <ctrl><shift>g do work, however.
