Hey, There are some very good reasons why you would want to see which
protocol your buddy is talking from. In my country you have the ability to
chat with people who are using cell-phones but it only works for some
networks. So knowing which protocol the buddy is using tells you if he's
near his computer or on a cell phone.
Also some protocols provide some abilities that others don't, some
protocols have web-based clients and some don't. Knowing which protocol
the buddy is using can help you know if you can do certain things or not.
for example, sending files isn't supported in all protocols, offline
messages aren't supported in all protocols etc.
I can understand the rational behind your decision to hide them, but
couldn't you let the user decide if he wants to see them or not? why not
set the default to "hide" but give a nice the option to choose to see the
 protocol icons?
It can even be a plugin for extra "one-look" info or something.
To decide for everyone that something is not needed and so even people who
want it will never have it just alienates users and forces them to move to
other clients. I loved gaim and thought it was the best multi-protocol IM
client for linux. I also love the improvements in pidgin but I really want
to see the protocol icons in the buddy list without having to hover to get
 the tooltip.
