 Ok, you must be new to this.  It took me a while to figure this out, but
 you don't need a .deb package.  You need the source.  Just download the
 tar.gz file and extract to a folder.  Then open terminal.  Type
 "cd<space>" (with space meaning to press space bar) and then drag that
 folder onto the window.  Hit enter.  Type "./configure". Hit enter. Wait
 for a long time until it's ready to accept input again.  A lot of text
 will go by. Just ignore it.  This could be a long time.  When you get the
 chance, type "make". Wait (hopefully not as long).  When you get the
 chance again, type "make install".  Wait.  Congrats, you have successfully
 installed Pidgin without a .deb package.  This proccess will usually work.
