Comment:

 1) make will virtually *always* take much longer than configure to run,
 for projects of any non-trivial size.
 2) Building from source on a package managed system is not a good idea if
 you don't know what you are doing.
 3) We have rpm packages because we have developers who use Fedora and
 build them, we don't have that for Ubuntu and the Ubuntu maintainers tend
 to stay up to date.
 4) The fact that Ubuntu doesn't update packages in the version you are
 using is a shortcoming in Ubuntu (for some definitions of shortcoming).
 5) A large number of people have made third-party .deb packages of pidgin
 for various distributions that use them, I would not however recommend
 using them, I was just pointing out their existance.

 If the Ubuntu community wants pidgin they should convince Ubuntu to
 upgrade packages in their older releases or upgrade to the newer releases
 themselves as pidgin is in Gutsy (though it is a release behind).
