Comment (by armand_vi):
I would like to support this request and point to Trillian as an example
for a very usable approach to the new window issue. In additiona to the
features also Pidgin offers (new window & hide), Trillian can be
configured to create new conversation windows minimized in the taskbar.
Focus remains on whatever the user is doing at that moment. Additionally
the taskbar entry for the new window may blink 3 times and remains marked
(orange in the default Windows XP theme) until it is attended to. I
believe the latter would not even require coding as it seems to be
standard Windows XP behaviour.
I have found this method the perfect compromise between notification and
not being bothered. That applies particularly but not only when at work,
where I might be giving a presentation or show a collegue something on my
screen. A short glance at the new blinking entry in the taskbar tells me
who sent a message and I can choose to open it (even during my
presentation if it's the boss calling) or leave it minimized if I want to
finish typing my email first or do not wish to force my collegues to
witness my girlfriend asking me to buy milk and massage oil on my way
home.
Of course, I also can understand the decision to not compensate
shortcomings of each and every operating system and window manager, even
though one could argue that porting an application requires just that.
However, given that this particular issue is one that could seriously
improve the user experience and - at least for me - is currently a knock-
out criteria, I would, if there was a poll, vote strongly for it.
Maybe a plugin could be a good compromise? Unfortunately I'm not capable
of coding it myself. Anyone?
PS: Thanks a lot for Gaim/Pidgin, it's close to amazing.
