 Not sure if useful but I've just successfully built on solaris x86
 (solaris express)

 ./configure MAKE=gmake
 then gmake and gmake install - I did encounter some path issues but once I
 added:
 /usr/ccs/bin and /usr/sfw/bin i was all ok.
