 "Online" icon is used in the buddy list for a contact that is "Away". The
 response probability is also shown for the contact as if they were not
 away.

 The contact in question uses multiple Jabber resources and logs in/out of
 them quite a lot, so my best guess is it is something to do with how
 Pidgin handles the changing of contact status when the contact signs off
 from one resource whilst another resource is still signed in.
