 Do you know what their buddy icon is supposed to look like?  Is there any
 chance you could have them email you the icon file and you could post it
 here?  Or, could you email (mark ot kingant dat net) or IM (markdoliner on
 AIM and Yahoo, markdoliner at hotmail.com, or mark.doliner at gmail.com) their
 screen name to me?

 Do you have buddy icon animations enabled?  You can see whether they are
 enabled by going to Preferences->Conversations->Enable buddy icon
 animation.

 The three possibilities I see are:
 1. Their icon is set to a large, transparent square
 2. Pidgin is rendering their icon incorrectly
 3. The icon is animated, the first frame of the animation is blank, and
 you have animations turned off
