 Words surrounded by asterisks (like *this*) are translated to bold and the
 asterisks are stripped.  While this may be useful, I don't think removing
 characters from the text stream is the Right Thing to do.  For example,
 irssi will apply bold formatting to the word and retain the asterisks
 which I believe is the correct behaviour.

 More of a problem is that if formatting is turned off, the asterisks are
 still stripped.
