Comment:

 I won't accept this as-is, as it seems to remove the ability to address
 people by name, when they do have an alias. Also, as the invite callback
 wants a screenname, instead of alias, I don't see how this works at all.

 You should see the completion functions in pidgin/gtkutils.c and see if
 you can do it that way, reusing that code, if possible.
