 I'm still up in the air about how to handle this. I'm going to explore
 switching to GtkStatusIcon for gtk+ >= 2.10. This would allow us to do
 something universally between *nix/win32, but would probably have to
 return a GObject (either a GtkWidget or GtkStatusIcon) and the caller
 would have to determine the type. This is is still a step up from
 returning a void *.
