 Update: I recompiled pidgin with gstreamer enabled (but nss still
 disabled), and it seems to be working fine. So the issue was apparently
 either with nss or with the combination of gstreamer and nss. Time to
 recompile with nss enabled and gstreamer disabled to see what I get.
