 I can't reproduce this. What sort of system is this on?

 I configured with:
 {{{
 ./configure --prefix=/tmp/pidgin-i18n-prefix --datadir=/tmp/pidgin-i18n-
 datadir
 }}}

 The .mo were installed in /tmp/pidgin-i18n-datadir/locale/*/LC_MESSAGES

 And Pidgin was able to make use of them.
