 I was able to get it to compile finally with some modification of your
 patching idea. Just to test, I took out the #if statement and just
 globally set #define _XOPEN_SOURCE_EXTENDED

 That did the trick and it finished without any more problems. I'm guessing
 that defined(__unix__) is on the right track, but the wrong syntax. Thanks
 for the help! Probably worth setting a *nix variable in there for the
 final release.
