 Am I interpreting that full bt properly that {{{username}}} is somehow
 corrupted? Would that mean that the ''incoming'' {{{icon}}} is pointing to
 freed data (despite having come from a lookup in the hash table)?

 Some variation of ref/unref protection, or sadrul's move of the call to
 purple_buddy_set_icon(), is necessary, though apparently it's not
 sufficient.
