 To begin with, this happened on 2.0.0beta6 on ubuntu feisty installation.

 On the first feisty boot (upgrade from edgy), and the first time i used
 the new gaim, the width of the buddy list started increasing, and kept
 increasing automatically, going out of the screen, to the next workspace
 if required. This was window manager independent, I tried it on Gnome, KDE
 and Blackbox. It was also "reboot-independent".

 So I checked the prefs.xml, and played around till I realized this
 happened when the mail notification of my yahoo account was on. Now the
 buddy list doesn't "grow". Then if I reactivate the yahoo mail
 notification, it starts growing again, and never stops.
