 It is very simple to reproduce this:
 - connect to a network (MSN in my case)
 - remove the network cable
 - you will see that pidgin still shows the list of buddies without
 notifying that the network is down

 if you plug the cable without waiting for more than 2 minutes the
 connection is still up, BUT if you wait for more, you will lose the
 connection to the MSN server without being notified of this: you think you
 are still connected because you see all the buddies that were connected
 before you removed the cable.
 of course sending/receiving messages does not work, and ends in a timeout
 error
