 I don't really want to post a full debug log here (though if anyone still
 thinks they need it I can mail it).

 Example of a buddy who I know actually has an icon, which will display if
 we fetch their vCard:

 No avatar hash here, so the problem is to my mind with the sending of
 avatars, nothing to do with the receiving. Thus nwalp's fix sounds like it
 ought to take out this bug.

 (coincidentally nearly all my buddies use Adium or Gaim for XMPP, and none
 use Google Talk which I believe automatically adds the avatar hash to
 outgoing presence stanzas - could go some way to explaining why no-one
 else was seeing the same dramatic effect)
