 I had the same problem here and did some tests with Windows version 2.0.0
 (not beta) :

 Some conversion happens in blist.xml, the buddy_icon tags (<setting
 name='buddy_icon' type='string'>FileName</setting>) disappears for my MSN
 buddies, so at the first use we still see the icons but not after a
 restart.
