 Evan:

 1. I've attached a patch to change from uintX_t to guintX (provided by
 glib). Can you please test this? If it works for you, it should be safe to
 commit. (The patch also removes the err.h include. See below.)

 2. Why are you including err.h? I don't see you using any of those
 functions. Maybe OS X's err.h is different than mine (Linux)?

 3. Isn't the sysctl stuff going to be kernel specific by nature? (I
 haven't really looked at this much.)
