Comment:

 pidgin does in fact offer such a feature for people who are using window
 managers that are incapable of creating new windows without giving them
 focus (I'm talking about you Windows, and to some extent GNOME). The
 option in pidgin requires you to tell pidgin to hide IMs in new
 conversations to the tray icon. If however you don't like that the other
 option is to just always keep an IM window open, I use an IM window to
 myself on the occasions that I need to do this.
 For the record, pidgin doesn't actually request that new conversation
 windows are to be given focus, it just creates them.
