Comment:

 Make sure the "Show system tray icon" preference is set to "Always", then
 just close the Buddy List window and it'll be minimized to the System
 Tray.

 There never was a built-in option not to show the Buddy List in the
 taskbar when it is visible - this was in the extended prefs plugin.
