 There are dozens of directories under pidgin/pixmaps which have
 Makefile.am files containing just a few pixmaps each; this is *really*
 slow, both at autoconf/automake time, and at install time (it's slow at
 build time, too, but lost in the noise).  This should really be handled by
 one Makefile.am with multiple targets, even if the pixmaps continue to
 reside in different directories.

 I looked at doing this, briefly, but it's a touch painful to convert, so I
 gave up for now.
