 With the regular version it seems as if the debug log is reset every time
 I open it, so the previous messages (there are some e.g. from the msn
 protocol) are lost.

 That is how it is supposed to work - you'll get the debug output from the
 last run.

 If you want to append to the existing file instead of overwriting it use
 the `>>` operator instead of `>` to redirect the output.
