Comment:

 That is correct -- DNS resolution fails for nexus.passport.com, but note
 that all of the other DNS lookups (e.g. messenger.hotmail.com) are
 resolving to local addresses.  This is how the "IM aware" firewall here
 inserts itself into the process for the purposes of logging IM
 conversations, etc. Apparently, however, it does not handle
 nexus.passport.com, but rather just blocks it.

 This has the effect of preventing Pidgin from connecting -- but it has no
 effect on MSN Messenger 7.5 (which I note is using a much later version of
 the protocol to connect).
