Comment:
I'm sorry if that comes off as being snide and disrespectful, I know you
guys do this in your free time, without applause or celebration.
I do however think for open source products to ever become as popular as
many marketed competitive products they must meet an exceptionally high
standard, and as such problems such as this are not only cumbersome to
other developers but showstoppers to those who would seek to use your
program in certain environments. Why is it that the build environment
fetcher is an externally developed tool when it is the first method of
building your product, and it is a product? I understand, after reading
more about it, that it can fall out of date, and that when developers have
an otherwise clean system it won't catch all potential problems. I had
problems with the binutil from MinGW earlier and I had to update it, and
that should have, but did not, tip me off that I should update all of the
MinGW binaries.
Unfortunately a great deal of open source tools have instructions with a
large number of instructions which involve relying on other open source
tools. I think that for the future development of Pidgin it would be a
good idea to develop your own build environment fetcher and have it
actually check whether or not the outside tools meet spec.
Once again, sorry for appearing snide, I was in a hurry and probably
should have foregone posting until I had more time.
Pre-post edit: Apparently this ticket was already modified before my post,
so I imagine I'll be hearing from you about this.
