 Sean, I have this thing where I do buddy aliases like "Sean Egan
 (seanegan)" for IRC. I've thought it might be useful to ignore something
 in parens at the end when checking for duplicates. However, with the
 protocol icons being gone, we've suggested users do things like "Sean Egan
 (Work)" and "Sean Egan (Home)", so that's a bit challenging. Perhaps, if
 there's no exact match found, try again ignoring parens? Of course, that'd
 be a LOT of comparisons and is probably not worth it, but I thought I'd
 mention this just in case you had any ideas.
