 Should have checked this before writing the above... but for the record,
 the same problem occurs with Yahoo as well as MSN, so it's not protocol-
 specific.  I agree with klines, there must be something goofy going on
 with the gtk file dialogue.

 I just reinstalled my old 1.5.0 source with the current kernel/gtk and the
 file transfers work fine, so the problem is definitely in the pidgin
 source and not related to changes in gtk.
