 Good point (I didn't notice that before). But just to be particular, it's
 the first part that's not true, the second part still is ("This should be
 possible by selecting white space below all contacts"). I don't know many
 (good) interfaces that don't allow deselection in this way.

 The behaviour I would expect is:
  * ctrl+click allows multiple selections (or deselections)
  * selecting empty space deselects all
