 I ran a few more traces.

 In these the initial message Pidgin sends does *not* exhibit the issue.
 That initial message receives a 401 response. Pidgin then sends a message
 with an Authorization header. The, this message is accepted ''but now''
 has the extra "\r\n" inside the body.
