 This is kind of hard to describe, but on Windows anyway, the status entry
 box (in the buddy list where we enter the text) shows an extra line or two
 if a smiley is in the away message. It might be a GTK thing. I attached a
 couple screenshots. Both show how much text can be entered without a
 scroll bar appearing. As you can see, the scroll bar pops up in the smiley
 away message a lot higher up than in the message with just text, which
 takes up a lot more space in the buddy list. Newlines cause the same issue
 but to a lesser extent (half a buddy node height as opposed to 2 from
 smilies).
