 Most of the new Tango icons are very pretty; however, I prefer the old
 typing/typed-something-and-stopped icons for conversation windows.

 With the old icons, you could easily tell with a brief glance whether the
 user is currently typing or not by the presence or absence of the hand
 over the keyboard. Currently, telling the difference between "typing" and
 "typed something but now idle" requires one to watch the icon for a moment
 or two to see whether it is animated or not.

 Being able to tell the difference between the two icons at a glance (as
 opposed to having to stare at it for several moments) is a useful
 usability improvement.
