Comment (by WyoPBS):

I can confirm that the same problem occurs with and without dbus compiled
in. I encountered it first with dbus enabled, then reconfigured with
 --disable-dbus and recompiled.

I can't speak for the other participants in this discussion but my system
is definitely not Ubuntu; it's Linux From Scratch built entirely from
source. As noted previously, I built it with gtk+ 2.10.3 and gnome
2.16.0. This is absolutely not a dbus issue.

I did not specify whether to include gstreamer, so I assume (since the
autodetect feature of configure found it) that was included by default.

That said, also note that I previously mentioned gaim 1.5.0 built on
exactly this same platform with exactly the same configure options will
transfer files without error. If an identical build environment will
produce a working file open dialogue in 1.5.0 and a crashing dialogue in
2.0.0, that suggests a change in the way the gaim/pidgin source implements
 the file open dialogue.

Of course the fact that other users are able to open/transfer files
without error makes isolation of the problem more difficult. I would be
interested in seeing the platform specifications (kernel/gtk/gaim/gcc
versions) and build configuration options of a successful build - that is,
one that does not segfault on the open file dialogue.
