Comment (by xq00):

 Same problem here.
Im using Pidgin 2.0.0 (Ubuntu 7.04, used the *.deb from getdeb.net for
installing) too and it also crashs on starting. Sometimes, you've to add
someone twice: he asks for authentication, you add him, then there's
another auth. request and you've to add him again, otherwise he doesnt
 have auth.
I tried to get a backtrace, dont know if it's what you need ;)

this old icq number to my buddy list and waited for unavailingly for
authorization. but then my friend tried to add me to his buddy list (he
uses icq5.1) and i've got an authorization request, so i added him on my
list with his new icq number under the same name.
 > now when i start pidgin and it connects my icq account an windows error
message comes says that theres a problem and pidgin has to shutdown.
 > i've installed icq6 to erase the wrong entry on my list bud only one was
shown. i erased the one which i've seen on the list but pidgin still
 crashes.
