 At work I am behind a proxy and after some Adium/GAIM changes last year,
 it works with only some connection errors when sending messages sometimes.
 Now more and more often I cannot connect and receive a "Writing error."
 Usually I can connect if I retry 10-50 times, but it's very hard now to
 make a connection. I thought it was a problem affecting all MSN clients,
 but the official MSN client can connect without a problem.

 Below is the debug output from Pidgin:

 {{{
 account: Connecting to account passport at hotmail.com
 connection: Connecting. gc = 015855E0
 msn: new httpconn (015FCDC8)
 dnsquery: Performing DNS lookup for proxy.work.edu.au
 msn: C: NS 000: VER 1 MSNP9 MSNP8 CVR0
 dnsquery: IP resolved for proxy.work.edu.au
 proxy: Attempting connection to 123.123.123.123
 proxy: Connecting to gateway.messenger.hotmail.com:80 via
 proxy.work.edu.au:8080 using HTTP
 proxy: Connection in progress
 proxy: HTTP proxy connection established
 msn: Connection error from Notification server (messenger.hotmail.com):

 msn: C: NS 000: OUT
 msn: Attempted HTTP write before session is established
 msn: Connection error from Notification server (messenger.hotmail.com):

 connection: Disconnecting connection 015855E0
 msn: destroy httpconn (015FCDC8)

 }}}

 I can provide TCP dumps from Pidgin/Adium/official client if needed.
