First of all, congrats on this project, its looking great so far.

Whilst I fully understand the uniformity argument, I find it difficult to
understand the reasoning to remove the option entirely.

Some people like myself have good reason to know which protocol I'm about
to speak with if the same person themselves are using multiple protocols.
 Here's an example:

I use Pidgin at the office using an internal XMMS server for business use
AIM and MSNM for personal use. Therefore, I need to know initially and
during a conversation that packets are not being sent over a public
service for business/confidential subjects, or conversly that personal
matters aren't being sent through a business service.

If the protocol and/or e-mail address information is not being displayed
(or cannot be switched on in an advanced option somewhere) then the
reassurance is not there for the end user. There are workarounds of
course, but they do not fit the requirements of someone who may have many
IM windows open, or who use multiple computers and need to check the
window information before typing the next line.

Whereas I can see the logic of disabling this information by default, I
cannot see the logic in not giving the end user the option to turn this on
 if they prefer/need it.
