 I also have the exact same problem with Pidgin. I'm working from behind my
 college proxy (Pidgin works perfectly from my home connection). Every 1 in
 10 times I try to connect, it will connect, and show my buddy list (even
 who is online and offline) but after a few seconds it disconnects. I found
 that if I leave the program it'll keep connecting and disconnecting
 automatically, sometimes the connection lasting for approx 5 minutes.
