Comment:

 Google Talk uses the XMPP protocol.  Set up an XMPP account with your
 Gmail username (the part before the @) in the screen name field, gmail.com
 (or whatever is after the @ in your Gmail address) in the domain field,
 then on the Advanced tab set the connect server to talk.google.com.
